Alternative British-ish pop/rock would be the simplest way to describe Semi-Normal. Having recently released their debut album 'Half Open Minds' the four piece from Adelaide have been taking great strides, becoming a fully rounded outfit both in the studio and on stage.
At the core of Semi-Normal is vocalist/guitarist Ben Downing, who's powerful voice and songwriting prowess give them their unique yet somehow familiar sound. Standing beside him are the searing lead guitar parts of Matt Parsons, who along with Ben provides the lush arrangements that are quintessential to the Semi-Normal sound. The rhythm is supported by the steady bass lines of Mandy Johnson, who also adds vibrant sweet harmonies to compliment the vocals. Finally the backbone of Semi-Normal comes by way of the articulate and energetic drumming of Dave Smith.
Semi-Normal formed in late 2003 when long time friends Ben Downing, Dave Smith and, Chris Johnson (guitar) began jamming together entirely for fun. They were later joined by Mandy Johnson who completed their quartet.
Their collective enthusiasm for moody, melodic, guitar-driven rock, encouraged them to continue crafting their musical talents in semi-isolation for almost a year, until the band finally broke out of the confines of their private jam sessions to start performing live around Adelaide.
The band then released their self titled demo, which clocked up some worthy achievements including success in 3D Radio's Local Live Charts (an achievement they would repeat upon the release of their album). Their first demo also made way for the band to tour eastern South Australia with interstate acts.
Looking beyond this, the band decided to set their sights higher and return to the studio to record their first full length album. Upon the successful completion of their album, the band returned to the live music scene to further develop their stage craft.
As Semi-Normal gained more live experience, the band’s sound and members, both matured. In addition to arranging and performing live gigs, their sound featured swirling crunchy indie guitars while Downing's lyrical content experienced a more introspective, grittier shift.
Upon the departure of Chris Johnson the band decided to continue as a trio, playing many shows with a more stripped back arrangement. More recently however the band decided to re-expand their sound by adding guitarist Matt Parsons to the lineup.
With the lush guitar arrangements returned to their live shows Semi-Normal are now more focused than ever, playing shows frequently. As always the band continue to create new material and craft their sound in the pursuit of perfection.
